Dr. Díaz del Castillo is a trained Biotechnologist from the University of León (Spain) and completed her Master’s degree in Biomedicine and Medical Research at Uppsala University (Sweden). She then moved to Denmark to pursue her PhD at the University of Copenhagen under the Horizon 2020 EU ITN BonePainI. During her postdoctoral training, Dr. Díaz del Castillo completed research fellowships abroad at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (UK) and the Mayo Clinic (Minnesota, USA). Today, Dr. Díaz del Castillo is Assistant Professor in Hematology and Bone Histology at Aarhus University (Denmark), where she leads the Castillo Team.

Patient advocacy

The end goal of our research is always to benefit patients- and so it was out honour to present our work in the AU Kræftforskningsaften, and talk to patients, relatives and polocymakers about our work on multiple myeloma!

Lab technician

I specialize in processing clinical and preclinical bone tissue samples, ensuring high-quality preparation for advanced analysis. My expertise includes developing and optimizing protocols for multiplex immunostaining and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH).

I want to understand the bone marrow microenvironment signature that precedes the development of multiple myeloma. Using single-cell and spatial transcriptomics on human samples, combined with state-of-the-art bioinformatic techniques, I aim to characterize the spatial organization of individual cells in the bone marrow and their role in the mechanisms of ageing and disease progression.

My research focuses lies both on the changes occurring during disease progression from a precancerous state (e.g., MGUS or SMM) to multiple myeloma, and on the mechanisms in the bone marrow that result in the symptoms and pain experienced by patients. Using bone biopsies from patients with multiple myeloma, immunohistochemical methods, and supracellular spatial transcriptomics, I aim to expand the understanding of blood vessel and nerve remodeling in the bone marrow, and the changes that occur as a consequence of the disease.

Upcoming PhD student

I am interested in skeletal frailty in patients with premalignant conditions, and whether we can use multiplex immunostainings, fluorescent in situ hybridization and AI-assisted histology to predict fracture risk.
